JAKARTA (Xinhua) -- The Indonesian stock market closed the year on a high note this week, with the main composite index rising by more than 50 percent during the year.
The Jakarta composite index, which reached an all-time high of 2,811 on Dec. 11, gained 6.12 points to close this year's last trading day at 2,745.83.The index gained 52 percent over the whole year, making it one of the best performing stock markets in Asia and the Pacific.
“With the high increase in its index, the Indonesian market became one of the best performing markets in the world,” Indonesian Stock Exchange (BEI) president Erry Firmansyah was quoted Saturday by local newspaper The Jakarta Post as saying.
Based on the performance of its main price index, Erry said, the Indonesian stock exchange became the third-best performing market in Asia and the Pacific after China's Shenzen and Shanghai exchanges, which rose by 163 and 98 percent respectively during the year.
The Indonesian stock market became known as the BEI earlier this month, following the merger of the Jakarta Stock Exchange (JSX) and the Surabaya Stock Exchange (SSE).
Sitting after BEI, the best performing stock markets included the Mumbai, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Singapore stock exchanges.
